Tao, who is a mathematician, doesn’t call it the Medawar Zone, but as I read this post, that’s what I kept thinking of.

Continually aim just beyond your current range

The point is to do work that continues to stretch your abilities, without insisting of yourself that you only work on breathtakingly hard problems. Tao’s take on this is apt. If it’s good enough for him, and good enough for Sir Peter Medawar, it’s probably good enough for you and me, too.
